I can recommend the Mystic Hotel in Istanbul as a welcoming, quiet and family-run pension, where you get a peaceful place to sleep and in the morning can eat your Turkish breakfast while sipping your fresh black tea on a wonderful terrace overlooking the sea of Marmara. The hotel is located in probably the nicest corner of Sultanahmet to live: A little bit hidden, this is a very low-tourism area (but only 5min walk to the big sights) , where mainly turkish families live, which means you walk through streets with beautiful crumbling old houses where the kids and cats are playing everywhere. Lets hope it stays like that for a while...

I really enjoyed my stay at the Mystic Inn. Oktay, Sevim. Begum, and Beyza were all so kind and helpful. The renovated Ottoman Building is close to everything although it can be hard to find so be sure you have your barrings ;) Many of the wonderful breakfast items have been sent up to Oktay homemade by his mother. The shower and toilet are combined so everything is always clean ;) Plenty of hot water, charm, and a cultural touch. Also need not be alarmed when you pay Oktay for a bus ticket and do not get a receipt or a ticket, the shuttle will bring you to the station and explain your situation ;) When you go be sure to say hello for me! Safe travels, Jessica
